Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Might Solve This

Whenever a significant honors show approaches, one notices a clamor to include additional classifications to honor unsung work and delight the spirits of followers with niche passions.

A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications actually cover many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences globally and have been for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
