Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the option to contest specific rulings from the official, echoing the protocol currently in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step comes just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
